Director of Legal & STEM Professions Advising

Job Description

Franklin & Marshall College (F&M) invites applications for the newly-created role of Director of Legal and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Professions Advising.  Housed within F&M’s nationally-recognized Office of Student and Post-Graduate Development (OSPGD), the Director will lead F&M’s robust legal professions advising system while innovating and implementing a STEM professions advising program. The Director may also have an opportunity to serve as an adjunct faculty member for a law, science or other course in an appropriate academic department.

As the Director, your essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Advising students and alumni about STEM and law-related careers, including summer and post-graduate experiences they can pursue to clarify and explore their interests;
  • Partnering with F&M’s Director of Employer and Community Partnerships to cultivate and promote internship, research and other experiential learning opportunities which will make advisees better informed, more competitive candidates for STEM and legal professions;
  • Guiding students and alumni through the professional and graduate school application process, including, without limitation, application materials, entrance examinations, personal statements and interviews, as well as general guidance on professional school financing;
  • Serving as the institutional liaison and advisor for F&M’s dual-degree engineering programs;
  • Educating faculty and professional staff on the academic requirements for the broad range of legal and STEM professions students are contemplating;
  • Designing and delivering workshops and resources for alumni and students, which support the Director’s advising efforts;
  • Collaborating on resources with F&M’s Director of Health Professions Advising, who advises students and alumni interested in medical and other health professions (e.g. physician assistant, dentistry, veterinary, nursing and beyond), along with the other student and alumni advisors within OSPGD who will also be supporting the Director’s advisees;
  • Advising and supporting the efforts of F&M’s student “pre-law” and STEM organizations including, for example, the John Marshall Pre-Law Honor Society and Mock Trial Team;
  • Collecting and maintaining data pertaining to the admission of students and alumni to law school and STEM graduate programs.

  • A graduate degree or equivalent professional experience in a relevant field plus experience teaching, coaching, advising and/or mentoring individuals interested in the legal and/or STEM professions;
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to recognize strengths and clarify the interests and values of students while assisting them in making informed decisions about their life after college;
  • Excellent strategic planning, leadership and organizational skills;
  • Commitment to developing innovative approaches to delivering excellent service;
  • Experience in creating partnerships with and working creatively and effectively with broad constituencies;
  • Team-orientation with an interest in collaborating with other members of OSPGD in preparing students and graduates for success beyond college;
  • Willingness to maintain a flexible schedule as needed, to accommodate evening and occasional weekend programs;
  • Familiarity and experience using Microsoft Office and social media;
  • Ability and willingness to provide excellent service and to work in a collegial manner with students, faculty and staff, and other constituencies is essential.

Offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of reference checks, a criminal background verification, Pennsylvania ACT 153 background clearances, and verification of credentials.  The College will coordinate these verifications.
